December to Remember

Curatorial Statement · 2025

December to Remember was conceived as a response to a quiet but persistent gap in the local art ecosystem of Abeokuta: the absence of accessible spaces where artists, audiences, and artistic processes could meet without intimidation or excessive formality. Rather than presenting art as a finished, distant object, this exhibition positioned art as a living practice — one that unfolds through conversation, experimentation, and shared presence.

The exhibition brought together artworks, artist talks, and live painting sessions to challenge the traditional passive mode of viewing. Visitors were invited not only to observe works on display but to engage directly with the thoughts, struggles, and decisions that shape artistic creation. By foregrounding process alongside product, the project emphasised transparency, vulnerability, and learning as essential components of artistic practice.

Hosted at House of George Art and Craft Gallery, the project prioritised local voices and emerging practitioners, recognising Abeokuta not merely as a host city but as an active cultural site with its own artistic rhythms and narratives.

At its core, December to Remember was less about spectacle and more about presence: creating a moment where art could be experienced as human, contextual, and grounded.
